Boo! Happy Halloween! I bet that greeting caught you by surprise. It was meant to. As I was leafing through my calendar I realized that Halloween is only two months away. Then I began to think about the "holiday."Isn't it interesting that on Halloween we intentionally go to places where we know we'll be scared. We even look forward to the adventure and we get energized by the fright. We feel triumphant at the end of the evening when realize that we've been terrified but we don't stay scared forever. We even know that everything associated with Halloween is our own creation, but we still react as if it was real and we enjoy the experience. In fact, soon after it's over, some of us may begin planning what we want to be next year for Halloween. I wonder how our lives would be different if we willingly faced all are fears the way we do on Halloween and if we knew that many of our fears were caused by illusions? We create our own horror show in our minds by worrying and anticipating what terrors will befall us next and then by responding to our own creations as if they were real. I wonder what our lives would be like if we invested as much energy in determining what we wanted to accomplish next year as we do in selecting Halloween costumes for ourselves or our children? That would mean setting a goal we want to accomplish, planning how we'll do it and then actually enjoying the entire process. As we confront our demons, I wonder how our lives would improve if we held on to the belief that everything will turn out fine in the end. Maybe all we need is to put on a mask of bravery and experience the joy associated with moving beyond our fears. If we act brave often enough we truly become brave and possibilities for happiness will transform into the real thing.
